Jim Sumpter

Department of Financial Planning Education

Jim Sumpter is the Founder and CEO of CMC Financial, a financial and tax planning practice
based in Birmingham, AL. With 28 years of experience in the financial advisory industry, Jim
works with individuals, families, and multiple generations to help them achieve their financial
goals. He holds the Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) certification and uses a comprehensive approach to financial planning, focusing on six key areas: cash flow, investment, insurance, retirement, income tax, and estate planning.

Jim graduated from the University of Alabama in 1992 with a degree in corporate finance and a minor in economics. He later earned a Master of Taxation and an Estate Planning Certificate from Villanova University's Charles Widger School of Law. Jim works with small businesses, individuals, estates, and trusts for tax planning and preparation, ensuring each client’s needs are addressed thoughtfully and effectively.

As a firm ambassador for StrongHer Money, a trademarked initiative within his RIA, Jim is
committed to empowering women to be financially fearless. He is an active member of the
National Association of Tax Professionals (NATP) and the Financial Planning Association
(FPA), where he served as past president of the FPA chapter.
In addition to his professional work, Jim hosts The Financial Puzzle Playbook podcast, offering bi-weekly insights on personal financial planning. In his free time, Jim enjoys drumming, playing golf, and reading, and is a passionate animal lover with several pets. He lives in Birmingham with his wife, Jennifer. Their three grown children—Carson, Madison, and Cassidy— are the inspiration for the name CMC Financial.
